Welcoming local artist Sarah Laidler to the gallery
Tree at Gyeongju - oil on canvas
‘I love the beauty of the solitary tree, the mountains, the sky and a restful place to sit.’
Sarah Laidler grew up surrounded by the native bush of rural Wainuiomata and was privileged to learn how restorative nature is from a young age - whether observing it, being in it or creating with it. She now lives at the foot of Mt Kaukau in Ngaio.
Her work is inspired by the subtle way light moves through the bush and over land, sea and sky. Sarah explores this through materials that help her feel grounded and reflect on the moment she wants to create.
Welcoming local artist Wendy West to the Gallery
Endemic to New Zealand, the majestic Royal Albatross soared into my imagination - mostly because of their dancing. These are the world’s largest flying birds, with a wingspan stretching up 2to an impressive 3.45 metres, yet their love story begins rather awkwardly. After spending their first six years roaming the open oceans, they return to land somewhat clumsily to find ‘the one’.
That’s when the choreography starts. The bill-clapping, prancing, sky-pointing, head-waving, preening, and synchronized wing flapping all make an appearance. For up to four years, a pair will practice together, building their bond and refining their moves until they create a dance that belongs only to them. Once bonded, they mate for life, re-preforming their signature routine every two years when they come ashore to breed.
Royal Albatross typically lives 40-50 years and spends 85% of their lives at sea.

Handblown Glass signed by NZ artist Matt Hall

Local jeweler Boyden Evans is a contemporary artist.
His range is unique and hand crafted. Rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces are now in the gallery.
Glass artist Matt Hall
While Hall constructs a new hot-shop at his home he works from fellow glass artist Luke Jacomb’s studio in West Auckland. Hall and Jacomb have been friends since teenagers when they both got jobs working for Jacomb’s dad, John Croucher, at Gaffer Glass. After working at Gaffer Hall developed his practice while apprenticing to John Penman and Peter Viesnik; as well as training in the Czech Republic and Murano, Italy.
Hall’s work is inspired by the clean forms found in Italian modernism as well as a material sensibility inherent in working molten glass. But most of all, Hall has a particular sensitivity to the swelling translucent qualities of colour.

‘Mono Flora’ - botanical monotypes
Mono Flora Series
‘This collection of botanical monotypes explores the delicate relationship between nature and printmaking. Each piece is created by hand on a gelatine plate using ink or gouache, capturing the unique textures, forms, and fleeting beauty of organic material. No two prints are alike—every impression is an original, shaped by the unpredictability of the process and the individuality of each plant. These limited edition works celebrate imperfection, spontaneity, and the quiet poetry of the natural world’. - Fee

I love skies and clouds!
‘Fractus clouds, also called fractostratus or fractocumulus, are small, ragged cloud fragments that are usually found under an ambient cloud base. They form or have broken off from a larger cloud, and are generally sheared by strong winds, giving them a jagged, shredded appearance’
